Six reasons why you should learn more about Natural Health

I was brought up believing that the doctor always knew best. However, when I became an adult I began to see occasions where the drugs that were being prescribed were not actually healing, but instead were creating more problems. Thankfully at around age 30 years of age, I was introduced to the idea that natural products and a healthy diet can heal, and when used carefully and with knowledge, many problems can be remedied.  Also, living a healthy lifestyle can help prevent many health problems. Knowledge about how to live a healthy lifestyle and a little understanding about natural remedies can build confidence and self empowerment.
Here are just six reasons why everyone should learn more about natural health.

1. Diet and Nutrition:
Many physical as well as mental health issues can be resolved by changing to a cleaner diet (improving nutrition), and learning to drink sufficient clean water.  Never underestimate the power of diet and nutrition. From my own experience, my health is much better when I eat the things that are good for my body, and my health suffers when I slacken off and eat other stuff.
I first heard about the power of diet in an article many years ago where I read of a woman who was about to have a hip replacement for arthritis. She was a tennis player and could no longer play tennis.  She made the decision to stop eating acid producing foods, and increased her intake of raw salads. Her hip improved, she avoided the operation, and got back into tennis. This story really touched me because back then I had been diagnosed with a problem in my hip which could develop into arthritis.  Even now I notice when I eat the wrong foods, I often get pain in my hip.
If you know about good diet and nutrition you can avoid or improve many health issues.

2. Remedies to Suit You:
There is a wide range of remedies, therapies and healing habits, from nutritional supplements to mediation techniques. You can be sure there will be some to suit you.
Here is a list of some that I have used. homeopathy, essential oils, herbal tinctures, vitamins and minerals, garden herbs, spices, super-foods, raw foods, hydration, exercise, radiation protection, reduction of toxins in the home, detoxification of the body, reducing stress, attitude of gratitude, creative visualization, prayer, forgiveness. There are many more out there.
I will be discussing some of these in more detail in future blogs. Knowing about alternative remedies brings about self empowerment.

3. Home Made/Home Grown:

Many simple remedies can be made or grown at home using garden plants and common household ingredients such as Baking Soda, Coconut Oil, Lemons, Garlic, Ginger root, Parsley, Onions, Raw Honey, Apple Cider Vinegar, Wheatgrass... the list goes on.  Knowledge is power.
My all round favourite super-food that I grow at home, is wheatgrass. It is very economic - just a dollar or two per week.  Wheatgrass is very easy to grow, and requires just a little time to sprout, plant and water. It can be juiced, chopped into salads or simply chewed. After a couple of months of having a daily dose of wheatgrass I noticed an improvement in my skin and hair. Wheatgrass contains a wide range of minerals and vitamins, and other essentials. It improves the immune system and is beneficial for many health issues.

4. Side Effects of Prescription Drugs:
Prescription drugs can cause side effects which create more problems. In my experience, just about every prescription drug causes a side effect.  I will no longer even take Paracetamol. Whenever I get a headache, I simply drink more water, and when I really need pain relief I use a homeopathic remedy.
My first lesson in the dangers of prescription drugs occurred while as a university student, I noticed a rash around my hair-line. The dermatologist gave me a low dose antibiotic for an extended period of three months.  I was not happy about taking antibiotics, but she assured me that it was such a low dose it would be fine.

Well the antibiotics did nothing at all to help the rash, and from that time onwards I suffered from a yeast infection. I later changed my hair shampoo to something more natural, and the rash went away.  But I struggled with the yeast infection for many years.
These days I keep drug free and choose to use natural alternatives - there is always an alternative. On the few occasions that any of my family have taken prescription medicine there has been a reaction ranging from upset stomach to intense itching, and lack of sleep. When we reported to the doctor, another drug was given to fix the side effect of the first, and the second drug then caused another side effect.  If you’re not careful you can very easily get into a spiral where more drugs are taken in an effort to counteract the side effects of the others.  Never again!
If you know about alternatives, you can avoid prescription drugs, except maybe in extreme situations.

5. Nothing is Impossible:
When medical doctors know of no cure, there is likely to be a natural therapy or product which will make a difference.  A few years ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s disease, which means my body was producing thyroid antibodies which were slowly destroying my thyroid.  This was creating a hormone imbalance, low energy, and other changes.
My doctor informed me that there was no known cure, and the usual treatment was hormone therapy for the rest of my life.  After some thought, I told my doctor that I did not feel comfortable about taking artificial hormones (nor hormones from pigs), and that I wanted to deal with the problem using natural methods.  My doctor, who knows me well, supported my option to choose.
I did some research, and found a book “Your Thyroid Problems Solved – Holistic Solutions to improve your thyroid”, by Dr. Sandra Cabot and Margaret Jasinska ND.
I studied that book and marked all the relevant information.  I learnt much, including particular improvements to my diet and the importance of iodine supplementation. I visited my naturopath and worked out a plan of action.
My next blood test showed a considerable reduction in antibodies which was very pleasing.  My doctor told me to keep on doing what I was doing.  Through the experience, I was able to inform and help myself as well as educate my doctor.

6. Natural Practitioners:
A good natural heath practitioner can often provide accurate diagnosis as well as safe, effective remedies which can resolve a wide range of health issues without the need for prescription drugs.  I like to use more than one practitioner. I go to my doctor for a few things, my naturopath for most health issues, and also an energy healer for other things. I do not believe that one person or one therapy can solve all.
The other thing to remember when choosing a practitioner, is the importance of feeling comfortable, supported, and respected, as well as having confidence in the ability and knowledge of the practitioner. In choosing my doctor many years ago, I sought out one who was open to natural/home birthing – at that time I was pregnant for the first time at age 39 and I wanted to have a water birth at home. I did not want to have a doctor putting pressure on me to birth at the hospital.
My naturopath can diagnose a problem or a deficiency, determine the severity of the problem, test any remedy for percentage compatibility with my body, and test for the optimum amount I should take per day and for how long.  On a return visit a test will determine to what extent the problem has been improved.

Start Today
So, whether you’re aged 16 or 116 or anywhere between, with or without children, male or female, I encourage you to think seriously about the benefits that can come from learning about and moving toward a more natural health program.  It is an ongoing process – start today, take one step at a time, search for knowledge and keep moving forward.  Lives can change, serious health issues can be resolved or perhaps avoided altogether. Most of all, you will become more confident in making healthy choices. Knowledge and experience brings self-empowerment.
